Group CEO

Executive Bio

An economist by education, Nils S. Andersen started his career as a controller with Nordic Sugar in 1982. He soon switched to the Carlsberg brewery group where he held a number of market-focused positions before taking on responsibilities as CEO of breweries in Spain and Germany. After having worked outside of Carlsberg for a two year period as member of the executive board of HERO in Switzerland, he returned in 1999.

As Executive Vice President and later CEO for the Carlsberg Group, Nils S. Andersen led a number of acquisitions and market entries and headed a number of other group-wide initiatives which turned around the financial performance of the group and strengthened its global position significantly. He also prepared Carlsberg for the takeover of Scottish & Newcastle before taking up the position of CEO of the A.P. Moller – Maersk Group in 2007. In the coming years, he spearheaded a transformation process which led to a more focused portfolio, a leaner organisation and increasing competitiveness for the group’s businesses. During Nils S. Andersen’s leadership, the Group has also increased its transparency and communication with stakeholders.

In 2011, A.P. Moller - Maersk launched a long-term strategy for the Group with focus on four core growth businesses within shipping and oil & gas, Maersk Line, Maersk Oil, APM Terminals and Maersk Drilling. The overall aim is to grow profitably and further stabilise the Group’s earnings. As of 1 January 2014, a fifth core business unit with shipping businesses was established.

Nils S. Andersen’s first priority is the name of the Group, and he is strongly engaged in the safety and motivation of employees. He continuously meets with them in person throughout the entire organisation to explain the Group’s strategy and engage in dialogue. He also has a keen, personal interest in markets and customers and he prioritises meeting with key clients on all of his numerous travels around the world. He is an acknowledged and often cited source of information on global trade and economy in major international media and forums.
