Nick Read will become Vodafone's Group Chief Executive Officer in October, succeeding Vittorio Colao. Business Chief looks into why Read has been chosen to take on the top job...
Nick Read, Vodafone's Chief Financial Officer since 2014, has big boots to fill as Group Chief Executive following the news that he will replace the current incumbent, Vittorio Calao.
Calao has been in the role for nearly a decade, creating one of the world's leading communications companies with the largest mobile network in Europe, all while being a pioneer in the development of IoT.
Read will succeed him having led the group's finance operations for the last four years, though he does have prior CEO experience having been in charge of the telco's Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific region.

A graduate in Accounting and Finance from Manchester Metropolitan University, Read held senior global finance positions with United Business Media Plc and Federal Express Worldwide before joining Vodafone in 2001.
Initially employed as a finance director in the United Kingdom, Read progressed through its national management structure, becoming Chief Operating Officer and then Chief Executive. He will officially replace Calao on October 1st.
"Nick has been the co-architect of the Group’s strategy together with Vittorio, combining extensive international operational and commercial leadership with world-class financial acumen," commented Gerard Kleisterlee, the Group's Chairman. "I am confident Vodafone will benefit greatly from his experience, insight and wisdom in his new role as Group Chief Executive."
