The Small Business Index 2019 has ranked Valencia as the leading city in Europe for small business, followed by another Spanish city – Madrid.

The index, which was released by the mobile payment platform, SumUp, grants Valencia a score of 10, with Madrid scoring 9.91.

Despite Madrid having a higher number of small businesses, Valencia offers cheaper rental spaces.

Vienna ranks in third position, with a score of 9.82, with Berlin and Barcelona following, scoring 9.73 and 9.64 respectively.

Poland’s Warsaw places in sixth position, with Essen, Athens, and Prague ranking in seventh, eighth, and ninth place.

The UK’s Birmingham takes the 10th spot with a score of 9.18.

“Small businesses support local people and protect the culture and authenticity of a city,” commented Marc Alexander Christ, Co-Founder of SumUp.

“At SumUp, we know it takes resilience and drive to overcome market competition. Our quick and easy payment methods allow growing UK enterprises to rival larger corporations when it comes to card payments.”

The index analysed the 100 most populous cities on the continent and ranked them based on the amount and type of Small Businesses, Density, Real Estate factors, and various forms of External Support.
