Top 10 companies celebrating their 10 year anniversary

The year 2006 saw the birth of some of today’s brightest and biggest companies.

From media services and retailers to tech companies and price comparison sites, the past decade has witnessed some remarkable business growth. Here are 10 companies and products which are celebrating 10 years in existence.

Buzzfeed: Founded in November 2006, BuzzFeed now generates six billion views each month. The business now boasts 18 offices and 1,300 employees around the world, operating 5 mobile apps - BuzzFeed, QuizChat, BuzzFeed News, BuzzFeed Video and Cute or Not. With more than 90M unique visitors outside the US, content is shared in 6 different languages (including Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, French & German) and 11 international editions (including US, UK, Germany, Espanol, France, Spain, India, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Australia and Japan).

notonthehighstreet.com: Founded by Sophie Cornish and Holly Tucker in 2006; notonthehighstreet.com now employs more than 200 members of staff at its offices in 'Silicon upon Thames' in Twickenham, just south-west of London. Simon Belsham became Notonthehighstreet's CEO last year. Turnover has shot up from £134,000 in 2006 to £156million in 2015, while the number of small businesses who sell through the site has ballooned from 100 to 5,000.

First News: Founded by Nicky Cox MBE, Sarah Thomson and Steve Thomson in May 2006; First News is the UK's only newspaper for young people, and the widest-read children's publication in the country with a readership of 2,042,199* seven to 14 year olds every week. The paper was the first medium to give British children a voice and, as publications like ‘New Day’ fold within 9 weeks of launching, First News has continued to grow year on year since its inception. With 516 issues under their belt, the paper now reaches over two million children and 15,000 schools each week.

Google Translate: Launched in April 2006, the instant automatic translation tool now supports 103 languages and is used by over 200 million people every month on translate.google.com and Google services such as Chrome, mobile apps, YouTube. In January 2015, users even gained the ability to translate text in real time speed with the launch of the real-time video translation feature.

Twitter: Founded in San Francisco, the 140-character messaging service has revolutionised the way people and businesses communicate. Now turning over well in excess of $2 billion a year, it has more than 330 million active users across the world.

Eventbrite: Eventbrite is a self-service online ticketing platform that people all over the world use to create events, sell tickets and manage registrations for events of all types and sizes. Often embedded into Facebook pages, it is a very effective means of organising events for people and firms lacking means to build their own ticketing infrastructure.

GoCompare: One of the first major movers in the now-saturated price comparison market, GoCompare is most well-known for its somewhat flamboyant adverts, fronted by the choir singer ‘GoCompare man’. The company was founded in Newport, Wales, UK, by Hayley Parsons, who spent 14 years at car insurance giant Admiral before founding her own venture.  

Virgin Media: This particular part of the Richard Branson empire celebrates 10 years this year. A pioneer in the UK for providing fibre optic broadband, brilliantly marketing by the world’s fastest man Usain Bolt, Virgin Media is here to stay for a long time yet.

Macbook: One of Apple’s most successful products, this series of notebooks has become the go-to for luxury-end laptops. With variations including the Macbook Pro and Macbook Air, the series is much more than the original Macbook released all the way back in 2006, and is now the best-selling series of laptops of all time.

Spotify: Now turning over around $290 million a year, it might come as a surprise to discover that the company responsible for the music streaming service Spotify began 10 years ago, with the product itself launched in 2008. It is now used in more than 50 languages by 75 million people.
